Our History
Nell's City Grill
is the original home of Walt's Restaurant. Walt's
original solid Cherry wood bar and back bar are still
intact and have been restored to their original
condition. The service top was crafted from a single
mahogany log, which was the largest log ever shipped
into the city of La Crosse. Mr. Bernard Hake split and
curved the bar into a single form, which took three
months to complete. The bar has been in service since
1896.
The upper walls in the Grill Room showcase the original
oil paintings created by Mr. Paul Stollenwork and
painted in 1954. The words all say, "Here's How" in the
following languages:
Lachaim - Jewish
Skaal - Scandanavian
Oogy WaWa - South Pacific
Cheerio - English |
Slainte - Irish
A La Salute - Italian
Prosite - German
Hoot Mon - Scotch |
On the upper wall leading into the Blue Room, "Auf
Wiedersehen" is painted. This phrase means, "Till We
Meet Again" in German.
I am proud to have my restaurant, Nell's City
Grill, located in a space that is so special to
the history of La Crosse. I hope that you enjoy your
dinner, the atmosphere and conversation.
